Goblins were added because they are one of the consistently most popular monsters in D&D style fantasy games. I placed them as the 'battle ready nuisance' that sits in order between kobolds and orcs. Right now I've placed goblins as more difficult than kobolds. This is a D&D trope. This is a short series where I discuss a few of the monsters in Netwhack and why they were added, what their balance considerations are. Sort of like a beastiary. It won't always be one monster a week, sometimes one every two or three weeks. But it will always be at least one monster per month!
